Help Those Underserved by the Healthcare System

These individuals and families are underserved by the healthcare system for several reasons. Some are financial. The disorders that stem from childhood trauma require intensive, family-based interventions that are either not covered by private insurance or only partially covered. Since these interventions often must be sustained over long periods, this can result in significant financial hardship for families. Often, and particularly with lower-income families, this means that these types of problems are treated inadequately or not at all.

Even when there are no financial barriers, healthcare providers may be ill-prepared to offer effective treatment for the effects of early childhood trauma. Many providers lack appropriate training or access to appropriate materials. Furthermore, practitioners in several fields including psychology, education, social work and medicine must rely upon inadequate basic research as to the effects and treatments of childhood trauma.
